Example 1: A 500k triangle

Task: GRL-WEB-STA-GRL Notes: This example is to show the wide variety of scoring possibilities; declared/not, completed/not and at a variety of speeds. As these have the same relative values (in most circumstances), most of the rest of the examples only show scorings for tasks declared and completed at 100kph in a glider with a handicap of 100.

Example 3: But doglegs are allowed

Task: LAS-HEC-ELY-CAL-LAS Notes: Same triangle but with dogleg. Doglegs of up to 5% of the total task distance are allowed with no penalty. Your distance and speed are calculated from the actual declared distance, not the triangular distance. The way to pick these tasks is to 1) pick the triangle, 2) add the doglegs ensuring they add no more than 5% to the task. Having declared the extra turning point you must, of course, go round it. The introduction of the ability to dogleg is primarily to ease task setting around airspace, but you may be able to use them to your advantage in other ways. If you want to go for records, remember it is the triangle that counts (ie. in this case it is a 519.7k triangle).

Example 5: A 25/45% triangle

Task: LAS-PAR-RAD-BRI-LAS Notes: 25/45 triangles have a good shape factor, but less than 28% triangles. This shape factor is now applied regardless of the task length. In other words, a 750k, 28% triangle is considered better than a 750k, 25/45 triangle and scores more highly (but good luck in finding one!).

Example 6: Not quite a 25/45 triangle

Task: WAS-BAT-BRI-WAS Notes: This triangle is not quite a 25/45 triangle and is scored on the 'normal' basis. The normal basis is based on the ratio of the task distance to the length of the 'Convex hull' containing the task points. These are scaled to give shape factors in the range 0.82 to 1.00. By definition, convex task shapes get the best shape factor. These include out-and-returns, non-FAI triangles, squares. More examples follow...
